Baby sleep training: No cry

Baby sleep training: No cry

Sleep training: "No cry"

The approach
At bedtime, respond right away to your baby's crying.

The goal
Comfort and soothe your baby to sleep.

Age
Any age.

Tip #1: Nap schedule

A daytime schedule helps regulate nighttime sleep

Tip #2: Early to bed

Try an earlier bedtime, like 6:30 or 7 pm. It's harder to get an overtired baby to sleep.

Tip #3: Bedtime routine

A bath, a book, a lullaby, then bed. Same time and order every night.

Tip #4: Shhh…

Use key words and sounds to signal that it's time for sleep. Repeat words or sounds so your baby associates them with bedtime.

Tip #5: Set the mood

Make the nursery a restful place. A dark room. White noise. Try warming sheets with a hot water bottle. Soft, breathable clothing. Newborns may sleep better when swaddled.

Tip #6: Be patient

Don't respond to every noise your baby makes. Learn to distinguish a real cry from a sleepy whimper. If you're not sure, wait a minute outside the door. Every baby is different, be flexible and choose a sleep strategy that works for your family.
