One of the most common questions I get from new mothers and their partners is: When can I start having sex again?
The goal is to wait six weeks, preferably after your postpartum appointment, so your doctor can make sure you're well recovered from your birth.
There are a few reasons why it's best to wait. Your cervix is still a little bit open, which can increase risk of uterine infections, perineal stitches can be disrupted, C-section closure can be disrupted.
But after six weeks it's okay to start trying when you're ready. But it can be uncomfortable or even painful. When you do decide to start having sex again, be sure to lube, lube, lube. Low estrogen levels and oxytocin, if breastfeeding, can dry out those vaginal walls. Move slowly, as your body is recovering. Watch out for your breasts, which are often tender and very sensitive. And if you have pain or bleeding during or after sex, see your OB.
Having a new baby in the house changes just about everything. When you add to it the significant hormone changes, sex can feel more challenging than joyful. Take time to discuss with your partner how to connect during this transition.
